I was seconded down to the Faculty of Engineering for several months to fill in for a staff absence.
This role entailed providing sole technical support for the Faculty Office. Providing support for over 50 staff members using a variety of Operating Systems, maintaining the file server and networked printing facilities, providing regular system back-ups, providing technical solutions and assisting in IT planning for the Faculty Office.
This role also entailed maintaining and updating the Faculty Office website. This role required a high degree of familirity with Information Division policy and systems. It required a high degree of indepence and ability to manage my time well and to prioritise effectively.
I was placed on secondment to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering which required a Systems Administrator for several months. This involved maintaining the network and UNIX servers for the Department. Also involved was installing new software, implementing backup solutions and providing technical solutions and support to staff and post-graduate students. It also involved assisting with planning the future IT direction for that department, including setting up new labs for post graduate students.
At Engineering Computer Resources, we provide six computer labs for use by students in the Faculty of Engineering.
Recent major changes at ECR involved a lab wide upgrade from Windows NT to XP. This project included a full operating systems upgrade and testing hundreds of software programs to make sure they worked on the new system. I have also been responsible for writing all the documentation for the new systems and updating all the ECR webpages and FAQ's to stay current with the changes.
This job involves a wide range of duties including systems support for a XP and IRIX network and providing technical support for students using both XP and IRIX. This role covers a diverse areas and requires a broad knowledge of networking and a variety of different Operating Systems and hardware, as well as familiarity with many specialist software applications.
Other duties include web design and web maintenance work including the design, creation and maintence of a new internal admin site, working on acceptable use policies, documentation and planning a variety of projects, including the developement of new Linux labs, testing new software and a variety of OS's, procedure and planning documentation as well as creating a Disaster Recovery Plan. Monitoring lab usages and anticipating demand on resources, planning large upgrades and changes to facilities.
As well as daily administration duties, work involved setting up and establishing all necessary administration procedures as required by a new company, as well as learning office management, project management and time management skills.
Other duties involved setting up and maintaining an accounts system (using MYOB). Setting up and maintaining a records system. Introducing new employees to the inner working of Netizen, training new admin staff. Dealing with both clients and vendors on the phone and in person. Maintaining inventory and purchasing supplies.
I was also responsible for a number of web based projects, some project management, creating and maintaining web sites, including the internal staffsite. Also doing web reviews and critiques of other site and fixing clients sites with a view to good clean code and usability. Other projects involved working on training materials and testing them for Netizen training courses
Netizen specialised in providing systems support, training and development using Open Source Tools and primarily Linux and BSD operating systems. This required a high degree of familiarity with Linux, plus teaching UNIX skills to new non-technical staff members. As well as a solid understanding of the requirements of all sorts of development projects.
Involved the installing, configuring and supporting Netscape on staff machines, as part of a project to move all staff machines at Monash University to the same systems. This involved working with a variety of operating systems and many different machine types and configurations. Other duties involved making appointments with individual staff members to upgrade their machines and co-ordinating a group of Netscape technicians to perform the upgrades. As well as technical and organisational skills, this job involved a large amount of PR skills, as the project was unpopular and we often had to 'sell' the new Netscape to other staff members who were reluctant to make the change.
Providing technical support and software installation to faculty staff, in a Mac environment.
Answering technical inquiries and providing assistance to other students, also trouble shooting a wide variety of computer problems.
A variety of consultancy projects, including website construction, design and maintenance, for both social and commercial websites (examples of work can be provided). I have often provided training for people in HTML and web design. I also have written several articles on web design and standards.
I've been using computers since 1985 and I am familiar with a wide range of programs and operating systems. I have used this knowledge in a variety of volunteer positions, including setting up working systems, upgrading present facilities, creating web pages and programs to assist in procedures, networking machines and setting up mailing lists to improve communication.
I am a member of a small group referred to as Vurt.net. We are dedicated to providing a net based presence for role-players across Australia. Vurt provides a server, free email, web space, mailing lists and Usenet access for Australian role-players. As well as dealing with technical issues, Vurt provides a mentor program. BBeing a member of Vurt also involves making and maintaining contact with role-playing groups across Australia, arranging cross promotion with role-playing conventions and advertising Vurt's services to the role-playing community. I am also vurt.net's current webmistress and responsible for site design and maintenence.
I am a fully licensed driver. My hobbies and interests include computer geekiness, reading (esp. Sci Fi and Cyber Punk fiction), writing, cooking and role-playing. I am a very enthusiastic person, always willing to stretch myself and discover new things. I never want to stop learning.
